We have been doing some fascinating research on the CEO life cycle and shareholder value creation that was published in the November issue of HBR. The results of our initial quantitative analysis are remarkable and upend conventional wisdom how CEOs think about their development and growth, and how Boards view CEO performance and tenure. We have interviewed 50 CEOs to learn about their actions and strategies to outperform their peers.

To preview our research effort at a high level, we have looked at 747 S&P500 CEOs’ ability to create shareholder return throughout their tenure and find that:  

- CEOs ability to create value is not linear, but follows a u-shaped pattern. 

- Distinct stages of head and tailwinds for value creation emerge. 

- Some of the highest performing years of CEOs are after the average CEO’s tenure ends.
